桜、花見。The Japanese Cherry Blossom Thing
Published April 1st, 2007 in Blog.
For a few days each year at the begining of Spring, Japan’s parks and countryside spark back into life with the coming of the heralded cherry blossom. This is no small event for the Japanese, whereas in most countries an interest in flowers or botany is generally regarded as something for Gran, or ‘ninnies’, the parks around Tokyo at this time swell with sprawling hoards doing what they call “hanami” (looking at the flowers).
I believe the convention for the youngsters may be more associated with getting pissed than observing the natural beauty as one could observe a sizeable number of intoxicated youths packed shoulder to shoudler sat under the trees in the park. In fact, I’m sure if I pop back this evening I’ll be in time to see a lot of ‘blossom’ eminating from the youths’ gobs.
